Iran – Pakistan Conflict 2024

Iran and Pakistan’s relationship has always been complicated, characterized by times of cooperation as well as conflict. A new high was just attained in January 2024 as a result of cross-border military operations between the two nations.

What were the recent events that occurred?

94 people were killed after an explosion in Kerman, Iran, on January 3, 2024. Pakistan was charged by Iran with providing sanctuary to a jihadist organization that carried out the attack.

Iran fired missiles into Pakistan’s Balochistan province on January 16, 2024, allegedly targeting the insurgent group Jaish al-Adl’s hideouts. Pakistan launched airstrikes against Iran in retaliation because it saw the Iranian attack as an outright breach of its sovereignty.

On January 27, 2024, reports surfaced that nine Pakistani nationals had been shot dead in southeast Iran by gunmen. After Iran and Pakistan decided to hold diplomatic negotiations to stop the situation from getting worse, this occurrence happened. Iran and Pakistan announced on January 28, 2024, that they respected one another’s sovereignty and had reconciled.

Iran – Pakistan Relations

After British India was divided, Iran was the first nation to acknowledge Pakistan’s independence, forging a close early relationship. In the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistani conflicts, Iran backed Pakistan. Pakistan’s relations with Iran underwent a dramatic change in 1979 after the Iranian Revolution when the country recognized the newly formed Islamic Republic but continued to harbor ideological reservations. Further complicating their relationship was the fact that both countries supported opposing sides in the Iran-Iraq War and had different goals in Afghanistan; Pakistan backed the Taliban, while Iran supported the Northern Alliance, which wanted to oppose the Taliban.

What are the reasons for the conflict in 2024?

Pakistan allowed jihadist groups that it had previously supported, especially during the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980s, with the help of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Some of these jihadist organizations changed over time to become organizations with more expansive goals, and their actions went beyond local wars. During this time, Jaish al-Adl, or its forerunner Jaish al-Jihad, had come to prominence.

An autonomous Baloch state that includes parts of both Iran and Pakistan is what Jaish al-Adl aspires to. According to Jaish al-Adl, the Iranian government is tyrannical and to blame for the issues the Baloch people are facing. They have carried out multiple attacks against officials and security personnel, frequently claiming that they are in revenge for acts taken by the government.

Conclusion

The latest military confrontations between Pakistan and Iran bring to light both contemporary issues and intricate historical relationships. Now, the recovery from tit-for-tat strikes is important for the whole region, not just the countries participating.
